In case you’re not much of a reader and ever wondered why fervent readers never get tired of burying their noses in their books, or how they manage to carry a different one every single week under their arm—let’s shine a light on the matter. Reading is not just a form of activity, it is a feeling. It is an experience. It is stumbling upon different people possibly from a different era. Think Jane Eyre, Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, Dorian Gray, or perhaps, Mr. Rochester. They were all completely upheld in a culture so unlike the modern one we have now. Yet we are offered this access to see the world through their eyes via literature. And sometimes, even I myself wish it was easy to literally dive in between the pages and send myself some place in the past—where ballgowns are the norm and fancy dinners are the custom practice.
Most of the time I just get so lost in these stories that I forget to appreciate and actually think about what it is with reading that keeps me stuck in it. But now that I’ve thought of it, it’s quite the comfort to realize and pinpoint the simple joys I get from reading.
Coming across words that are new to me. I really, really appreciate the addition to my vocabulary.
Reading literary works like Dorian Gray. I swear, it is such a refining experience. Every time I finish a chapter I feel like I’ve just had a sip of wine or something. It’s simply fulfilling.
You know that feeling when you get so lost in reading and the real world suddenly… disappears? And I mean, literally, disappears. Your focus is entirely on the story and you just don’t hear anything from your surrounding and it’s just you and your book against the world. Yeah, that feeling.
Having hot cocoa or hot tea by my side as I read. It seriously completes the experience. I just feel so official whenever.
Reading a paragraph so accurate I’d have to space out and let it sink in before I can carry on reading again.
Finally finding my bookmark after I lost it under my sheets. Really, how many times does this have to happen?
Oh and did I mention waking up only to find out that it’s raining? COME ON, it’s the perfect reading weather!
